Geekerella: A Whimsical Journey for Every Geeky Heart
I’m a Geek, and I absolutely adored Geekerella by Ashley Poston—and I’m not afraid to admit it! This novel was my last completed book of 2019, and what a fantastic way to wrap up a year filled with literary gems. To sit alone in my car during the holiday travels, listening to this modern-day Cinderella retelling, was nothing short of delightful. On a whim, I finally downloaded it, and I can confidently say that the stars blessed me that day.
From the start, I resonated deeply with Elle Wittimer, our spirited protagonist. Living with a wicked stepmother and two equally unkind stepsisters, Elle embodies the struggle of many who feel out of place. Working diligently at a food truck called the Magic Pumpkin and spending her evenings blogging about her cherished fandom, Starfield, she perfectly captures the essence of what it means to be passionate and unapologetic about one’s interests. Listening to her story, I found acceptance and understanding, all the while chuckling at her relatable frustration when the movie reboot of Starfield was announced.
What particularly struck me about Geekerella were the themes of self-acceptance and the importance of pursuing one’s passions. In a world where social pressures often stifle individuality, Elle’s journey challenges us to embrace who we are. The witty exchanges between her and Darien Freeman, the heartthrob cast as her beloved character’s love interest, were both humorous and heartwarming. Their texting relationship, blossoming in anonymity, painted an authentic picture of connection in a digital age—something I found beautifully relatable.
Poston’s writing style was light and engaging, capturing the fast-paced excitement of conventions while simultaneously delving into characters’ emotional depths. One standout moment for me was when Elle realizes she’s not simply a "fan" but part of a larger community that understands her quirks and passions. It’s a comforting reminder that we are not alone in our obsessions, whether they be books, movies, or cosplay.
Additionally, the homage to nerd culture throughout the book made it a love letter to those who find solace in fandoms. Quotes like, “You have to take the leap, even if it terrifies you,” resonated deeply, showcasing the underlying message of courage in the face of our insecurities and fears—as someone trying to embrace my own inner geek, this hit home.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by Geekerella and its message of authenticity. Each chapter felt like a warm hug, and I’m eagerly looking forward to delving into the next installment of the Once Upon a Con series.
If you’re a lover of fairy tales wrapped in geeky charm, then this book is for you. Whether you identify as a geek, a dreamer, or simply someone in search of an uplifting adventure, Ashley Poston’s Geekerella is sure to capture your heart just as it did mine. Thank you, Ashley, for this wonderful tale; it was truly a bright spot in my reading journey!
