Few books make me as happy as this one did. Typically I don’t love books that are purely comical. My sense of humor tends to be a bit different than the average person’s. That said, this book is hilarious!
Lost was one of my favorite shows. (Until it started getting all confusing with time travel, but that’s another story entirely.) The blurb I read stating Beauty Queens was “Lost Meets Miss USA” intrigued me to no end. Not to mention I just LOVE Libba Bray.
The sense of humor is a bit slap-stick meets pure snark. There’s something for everyone. The characters range from slightly bitchy to completely ditzy. Each is comical in her own way. Not to mention there are sexy pirates, a curious volcano, and tons of beauty samples. I enjoyed the “commercials” from the Corporation. While the book is hilarious, there are also serious elements and issues, but those are done in a way to make it all seem funny and light.
The only con to the entire book was trying to keep up with who was who. At times they’d refer to someone as her “state”, others by her name. I’d find myself going “Who was Miss Ohio?” (for example), but a little further reading usually cleared that confusion away.
