misfit by jon skovron

But on her sixteenth birthday, her father gives her a present that brings about some unexpected changes. Some of the changes, like strange and wonderful powers and the cute skater boy with a knack for science, are awesome. But others, like the homicidal demon seeking revenge on her family? Not so much.”

Misfit felt like it was a little bit out of my comfort zone, that being said it was an excellent read! It was a bit confusing at first, though. The confusing part was mostly formatting of the ARC, though, so I hope the final book is a bit clearer. For example, some chapters were about Jael’s mother, others were about her, and some were Jael having dreams or visions of her monther, which normally I’d love, but there was no distinction of what was going on at times.

In Misfit you have a teen girl who is a halfbreed, half demon and half human. She’s come to terms with this at a young age and is used to keeping it a secret. Her father is overprotective though, so she never really gets to do anything fun. From the description, I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into.

Like I said it was a bit out of my comfort zone, but really it was more like I just didn’t know some things already. I’ll admit I have little-to-no knowledge on Catholic beliefs, I was raised Baptist, so aside from the basic things I picked up from friends or readings over the years, I have no clue about their belief system. When I was reading this book, I did do a bit of research so that some of the things mentioned would make more sense. I don’t think that’s necessarily required, I could’ve read the book just fine without knowing these things, but I was curious and I like to know what I’m reading about. That being said, I was fascinated learning all of this new information!

While it was a bit confusing at first, I loved how the author brought in so many different types of mythologies and belief systems. There were mentions of Aphrodite, Lilith, and Samson & Delilah for example. It was very interesting and kept me hooked wanting to uncover more about this world of demons.

I love Rob, the “cute skater boy”. He’s spacey, yet obviously intelligent. Despite that, I never really felt a love connection between the two. It felt like they had more of a best friend connection. Jael’s uncle was VERY amusing to me, I think he might be my favorite character.

I definitely want to read more about these characters, so, I’m hoping there will be a second book. Especially now that I’m brushed up on my Catholic-knowledge.

Misfit is supposed to go on sale August 1st.

I received my copy via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
