Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep

Dark Frost is the third book in the Mythos Academy series- this review might contain spoilers for the previous books! Fans, be sure and check out my interview with Jennifer Estep from earlier this month.

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?

It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.

Dark Frost picks up where Kiss of Frost left off and proves to not give Gwen and the gang a break – at all. In fact, the book shortly after beginning, is an intense attack scene.

What’s a book without a little relationship drama? To be honest, I’m hoping soon that Gwen’s love life settles down. A girl can only handle so much stuff at once! Her situation with Logan in Dark Frost began to frustrate me a lot, because it was constant hot and cold.

I am SO excited, though, to have more of the side characters in Dark Frost. Those friendships and relationships always add so much to the story. Such as the case with Daphne! I love this girl, she’s learning more and more about her powers and I can’t help but feel for her.

Like the title says, Dark Frost is darker than previous books. Despite the toll on the characters, I was excited to finally have answers and more details to do with Gwen’s mom and Loki’s Champion – finally.

I have to confess, the books have become a sort of guilty pleasure for me. They aren’t my favorite series, but there’s just something exciting and fun about visiting them. The plot in Dark Frost is pretty predictable and I saw it coming early on. While that can be disappoint for some readers, it doesn’t bother me with this series. Probably because I look at them AS a guilty pleasure.

Crimson Frost (Book 4) releases in January. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I received my copy of Dark Frost: A Mythos Academy Novel from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
