Slide by Jill Hathaway

Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister’s friend Sophie didn’t kill herself. She was murdered.

Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn’t actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else’s mind and experiences the world through that person’s eyes. She’s slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed “friend” when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie’s slashed body.

Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can’t bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting distant lately, especially now that she’s been spending more time with Zane.

With a synopsis like that, I was bound to be drawn it to Slide immediately. It has one of those basic story lines that are completely unique and you can’t help but wonder just what is really going on.

Vee has to be careful not to touch anything anyone owns, because anything can trigger a “slide”. As a reader I found myself wondering who she’d become next and what would be happening, just like Vee. When Vee slips into a friend of her sister to witness her death, Vee immediately starts trying to convince everyone it wasn’t suicide.

Vee isn’t our typical heroine – she has pink hair. She’s not popular, but at the same time she’s not like every “rebel” main character. Her mother is deceased; her father is a workaholic, so she spends most of her time fighting to stay awake, taking care of her sister, and hanging out with her best friend.

Slide features a very captivating story that kept me turning pages long into the night to just see what was happening. Hathaway is definitely an author to watch for, her writing style is beautiful in a way not found in most mysteries. I personally can’t wait to get my hands on book two, Imposter, to see what is next!

I received Slide from the publisher in exchange of my honest opinion.
