“Teenager Shanna Hunt has been hunting demons since her parents were murdered by them. She’s used to doing things alone, her own way, but one fateful night throws her into the company of a team of hunters, each specializing in a particular kind of monster: vampires, werewolves, witches, shape-shifters… This newly-formed team should be an unstoppable force for whatever is out there picking off individual hunters across the globe, but their first battle together against the monsters of the night could be their last.”
This is the sort of self-pub that does it oh-so-right. It makes you wonder why it’s not published. I had read a short review of Her Dark Destiny that compared it to the Mortal Instruments, as a total complete fan girl of Cassandra Clare I knew I had to read this book. It really did feel like a more grown-up version of her books, hunters fighting in a team against monsters. Yet it felt like a lot more.
The characters are engaging, the monsters seriously creepy. Some of them seriously grossed me out, others had me wanting more details. Each character in the team has come from some sort of rough background and has prevailed. Shanna’s loss seriously broke my heart, she comes across as so realistic. She actually shows emotion when bad things happen to those who she loves, yet she isn’t a total disaster either, which is something I’ve seen lacking in some books. I was so torn between Damien and Cameron, the two potential love interests of Shanna that I’m still not sure which one I’d want to pick if I was her. The others in the team are very intriguing, each with their own storylines that I can’t wait to find out more about!
Caution: I would like to caution everyone that some of the phrasing in Her Dark Destiny feels a bit mature, but the characters are 18+, so it worked here. Nothing actually happens, but words like “erotic” are used as descriptors and one of the characters is a prostitute. Like I said, these things are mentioned, but I know some of my followers are younger readers and might be bothered by those things.
I have to say, if you are a lover of exciting action-packed books, you definitely need to get this one! The sequel is currently out as well, so I’m hoping I can get around to reading it soon. Both are currently available as e-books on Amazon.com and BN.com.
